What
For the past 14 years, BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, UK, has been organising annual Sponsored Walks across the country. It’s BAPS’ fun and healthy way of getting everyone involved to help one another.
Some of the recent years have been especially successful in supporting various educational and medical charities [see: 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007]. Last year, for example, the Walk helped raise £25,000 for the British Heart Foundation. This year, BAPS is delighted to be supporting Diabetes UK. 10% of all funds raised from the event will be donated to this leading British charity.
When
This year’s event will be taking place on Sunday 6 April 2008 at 13 BAPS centres across the country. (more details to follow)
It was officially launched on Saturday 12 January by Mr Douglas Smallwood, CEO of Diabetes UK, at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, in Neasden, London.

Why
BAPS is committed to being not just a participator in our community – but an active and valuable contributor. And that’s why BAPS in the UK has a long record of various charity initiatives. Most recently, this has included raising funds and awareness for:
- Children in Need, one of the UK’s favourite charity campaigns, through an inspiring cultural programme staged just by children.
- The British Heart Foundation, the UK’s leading charity working to prevent premature heart disease through pioneering research, vital prevention activity, and quality care and support. BAPS raised £25,000 for the BHF during the 2006 National Sponsored Walk.
- The Blue Peter ‘ShoeBiz Appeal’ in support of a worldwide UNICEF campaign aimed at helping needy children in Malawi orphaned through AIDS. Young BAPS volunteers collected over 4,000 pairs of shoes.
- Breast Cancer Care, UK, the country’s leading provider of information, practical assistance and emotional support for anyone affected by breast health concerns. BAPS volunteers helped collect £12,000 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 2007.
